What Prince William County sellers
should know
-
Look up the floodplain on the County Mapper
Prince William County keeps floodplain boundaries on its County Mapper, so you can check your own lot before a buyer asks. Building in a mapped floodplain is restricted, and the county has seen major floods in 1937, 1942 and 1972, the last from Hurricane Agnes. Watershed Management answers floodplain questions at 703-792-7070.
-
Town and district levies sit on top of the county rate
Homes in Dumfries, Haymarket, Occoquan or Quantico also pay a town real estate tax, and the Bull Run Mountain and Lake Jackson service districts carry their own levies. The county also bills annual solid waste and stormwater fees, so ask Tax Administration for the full figure on your parcel before buyers start comparing costs.

-
Elderly and disabled tax relief for long-time owners
The county can relieve all or part of the real estate tax for owners who are 65 or older or totally and permanently disabled, live in the home as their only dwelling, and fall under its limits of $123,903 in 2025 household income and $400,000 in net worth, not counting the home and up to 25 acres. If a parent's home was on this program, the Real Estate Assessments Office at 703-792-6780 can explain how a sale affects it.
