Flood maps here changed in April 2024
FEMA reassessed flood risk in Fauquier County, and the updated Flood Insurance Rate Maps took effect April 25, 2024. The county's floodplain map application shows whether a property's floodplain limits moved. The county says structures outside the regulated floodplain limits won't be required to carry flood insurance, which is worth knowing before a buyer's lender asks. Community Development handles questions at 540-422-8220.

A sale ends the senior tax exemption
The Commissioner of the Revenue exempts the dwelling and up to five acres for qualifying owners 65 or older or permanently and totally disabled who live there, within income and net worth limits. When ownership changes during the year, the owner keeps the exemption only for the part of the year they qualified, so ask the Commissioner of the Revenue how a sale affects that year's bill.

Historic home owners can ask the county ARB
